After what feels like 425 tearful, anxiety-ridden, brain worms-filled decades (but has somehow only been four years?) the big day has finally arrived: You can now free your social media timelines from all traces of Donald Trump and his family.
Come noon on Jan. 20, Joe Biden's inauguration day, Trump will no longer be president of the United States. Among countless more important things, Trump's removal from office means that you no longer have to pay attention to what he, his family members, or the people in his administration are blabbing about. I mean, you can if you want to, but their updates are no longer essential reading in America!
It may sound like a small, insignificant action, but after the hell this man put our timelines through over the more than 1,400 days — the constant vitriol, misinformation, and recklessly irresponsible social media rants — muting select Trump-related keywords, Hulk-smashing those unfollow buttons, and maybe even blocking a family member or two will feel so damn cathartic.
I'm not the only person who's reluctantly stayed up-to-date on Trump-related social media posts for the past four years for fear that unfollowing would result in missing some vital piece of information. The unhinged, seemingly endless stream of push notifications at all hours has taken a serious toll on my mental health, and despite wanting to unfollow members of the Trump administration on a daily basis I stayed the course to remain up-to-date on politics, the coronavirus, and the fate of the country.
Through Trump's myriad of insults, lies, misspelled words, poor grammar, ALL CAPS RANTS, and more, I've been elaborately fantasizing about the day I'd finally be able to breathe a sigh of relief and turn off mobile notifications for his tweets. In a last-minute twist, Twitter beat me to the punch when the platform permanently banned Trump's account on Jan. 8. That's quite the start, but there are numerous other ways to purge your timelines of Donald, Melania, and the fam, too.
After Twitter took action against the president, other social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram (which is owned by Facebook,) Snapchat, and Twitch followed. Some platforms like Facebook and Instagram banned Trump indefinitely, but why even wait to see if his account privileges are restored? Disable push notifications, unfollow, mute, or block him now.
They say ignorance is bliss, and at long last we can afford to be ignorant about Trump-related social media posts.
While you're at it, unfollow Melania, Ivanka, Eric, Donald Trump, Jr., and Tiffany. Unfollow spouses and significant others like Jared Kushner, Lara Trump, and Kimberly Guilfoyle — whose names you probably wish you never had to learn. Say farewell to Mike and Karen Pence. And give a big old "bye bye" to administration members like White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany, lawyer Rudy Giuliani, and anyone else who fills you with burning hot rage or brings bad vibes to your timeline.
They don't deserve any more of your attention. Just focus on healing from Trump's social media wrath, savor online updates from the new administration (which we hope will be incredibly boring by comparison), and give your timelines and yourself a much-needed break.
Need some tips on how to make your break up with the Trumps social media official? Try muting specific keywords on Twitter or taking things a step further by muting, unfollowing or blocking accounts. You can learn how to block Facebook pages here, as well as how to unfollow, mute and block Instagram accounts. And here's how to block someone on Snapchat.
They say ignorance is bliss, and at long last we can afford to be ignorant about Trump-related social media posts. On Wednesday he will no longer the president, so take a deep breath, reassess your social media follows, and let out a colossal sigh of relief. Your timelines are about to get a bit less hellish.
